A New Move

Gift cards are everywhere these days and every company seems to have one available. 

Clothing stores, restaurants, online retailers, sports teams. 

You name it, and chances are you can buy a gift card for it.

One area where gift cards have not been as prevalent though, is in the online gaming community.  Online games have taken off in recent years and it seemed to be just a matter of time until gift cards moved into that arena.  One company has.

Wizard101 is a unique gaming site.  It is an online role-playing game where individuals can develop characters, use different types of magic, and get involved in wizard duels.  Wizard101 differs from other gaming sites in one main way: it is family friendly.

There are no blood and guts and there is no death in the game.  When a wizard loses a wizard duel, they are sent to a safe area to regain health.  Now, this innovator in online gaming has now begun using gift cards to increase users.

The site requires users to pay small amounts to upgrade characters and to purchase items wands and robes and treasure cards.  In the past, this was done with a credit card. Wizard101 is now offering gift cards in $10 increments at 7-11.

They are doing this in an effort to increase the ease with which kids can play the game.  Most of Wizard101’s target audience is fairly young and as a result, they usually need to have a parent with a credit card around to play the game.  Wizard101 is hoping to change all that with their new gift cards.

If this move by Wizard101 is successful, we’ll likely see more gaming sites taking a similar approach.  With innovative ideas such as this, gift cards seem to be here to stay!
